Saxtons River Orchard
In 1790, a homestead was built in the hills outside of what would become the village of Saxtons River, Vermont. As with all homesteads in that time, they planted a few apple trees for fruit, hard cider and other products to provide for the family through the long winter months. It soon became clear that the land was exceptional for growing apples. The fertile land would eventually become Saxtons River Orchard, a farm that has been in the same family for four generations.
The home, apple orchard and ponds are still located in the same places they were in 1790. The Freedman family views the farm as a chance to enrich the lives of their family, preserve the environment and to be a supportive member of our community. They grow 12 different varieties, including “some of the best MacIntosh in New England, and our newest variety, called Honey Crisp.”
The entire family is involved in every aspect of growing and harvesting. They take great pride in doing things the right way and producing “the best tasting apples that can be achieved through hard work and science.” Glenn Schreiter, farm manager, strives for perfection in both growing apples and conserving the land they all cherish.
