    A. Tonetta and Son Farm

Vineland, New Jersey has been home to the Tonetta family farm for three generations. All named Alex, the Tonetta’s have been growing diversified veggies for wholesale since their home farm of 40 acres was first cultivated. Today, Alex Tonetta (third generation, all named Alex), rents an additional 60 acres nearby to accommodate his red and green leaf lettuce, Romaine lettuce, escarole, endive, summer squash, zucchini, spinach, beets and herb crops.

New Jersey is home to many talented growers and favorable growing conditions.  Together, these factors have created a tremendously competitive marketplace.  So, if you ask “What is the most important job on the farm?” Alex Tonetta’s answer might surprise some: “At the top of the list is implementing a marketing strategy that’s different – making my farm stand out.  This is really important to faming in this country.”

Tonetta has a few plans up his sleeve.  Already, A. Tonetta and Son Farm experimented in a little direct marketing in 2008.  This year, packaged Romaine with Red Tomato will be added to the list.  Red Tomato’s big picture is not missed on this farmer so committed to marketing: “What [Red Tomato] is doing is key.  If [Red Tomato] can make marketing work, our farm will be here for the future.”
