Whether it’s perennials and hanging baskets or strawberries and asparagus, you can probably find it at Four Town Farm in Seekonk, Massachusetts. Just a few miles east of Providence, Rhode Island, the Clegg family produces an honest to goodness cornucopia of local produce and greenhouse plants on their 150 acre, fifth generation farm.

The original farm was purchased in 1900 by David Peck, and farming has been the family business ever since. Today, Chris Clegg works the land with his father and uncle while Chris’s mother operates the greenhouses and his aunt runs the retail stand, which is their primary sales outlet. In fact, over the years almost everyone else in the family has worked on the farm as well.

Chris isn’t shy about ticking off the bounty that the family farm produces: “We grow most types of small fruits and vegetables that can be grown in our climate. We are especially known for our asparagus, strawberries, sweet corn, melons, and fall crops. We also offer pick-your-own which includes strawberries, fava beans, English peas, raspberries, pumpkins, and cut flowers.”

If you ask this fifth generation farmer what keeps him on the land he answers simply: the quality of life. “It is peaceful working out in the fields and knowing that you are contributing something of value to the community.”
