The late 70’s saw Richard Marolda Sr. and his brother Butch setting down roots and starting up Marolda Farms in Vineland, NJ. The family now farms almost 350 acres in various blocks around town.
Transitioning the farm from one generation to the next isn’t necessarily easy but Richard and Richard Jr. Marolda think nothing of it. “It’s been a smooth transition. Every year, there’s just a little more on my plate while [my Dad] focuses more on supervision.” Explains Richard Jr. And, there is more than enough work to go around. Richard Jr. grew up on the farm learning the family business almost by osmosis: “I didn’t always think I would be a farmer but after a while it was the only thing I wanted to be. Once the decision was made, I went with it – never looked back.”
Today, the labor is divided between the three with Richard Jr. working on pest and weed management, organic growing, some sales, customer relations, logistics, and paperwork. Richard Sr. handles the farms employees, the packing house, harvests, and sales. Sherry holds down the office. With more than 30 crops for the wholesale market and a growing business in organic products, the learning curve hasn’t slowed down a bit for this family committed to providing their customers with the highest possible quality.
