Red Tomato: Press Room

Mission. Red Tomato’s mission is connecting farmers and consumers through marketing, trade, and education, and through a passionate belief that a family-farm, locally-based, ecological, fair trade food system is the way to a better tomato.

  • Red Tomato is a non-profit organization, founded in 1996 and based in Canton, MA. We are a unique organization, with one foot in the mission-based non-profit world and the other in the market-based world of commerce.
  • Our research, market development and education work is supported by grants and donations from individuals, foundations, and government programs.
  • Our trade work—buying, selling, and marketing of fresh produce to supermarkets and other customers—is supported by a small percentage of market-based prices. We also provide consulting on a fee basis.

Sales

  • Over $3 million in produce sales in 2008.
  • $1.64 million in produce sales in 2007, a 24% growth from 2006.
  • $12 million in produce sales since 1998 in over 300 supermarkets, cooperatives, campuses and restaurants.

Accomplishments

  • Red Tomato works with a network of over 40 fruit and vegetable farms in the northeastern U.S., and markets their produce to supermarkets and other customers, primarily in the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions.
  • Our Eco Apple program brings together a network of 13 of the top ecological apple orchards in our region to collaborate with research scientists, marketers, and advisors, to develop production protocol, brand identity and marketing programs that support reduction of toxic pesticides through the use of advanced Integrated Pest Management.
  • As a recipient of a three-year grant from the Kellogg Foundation as part of their Food and Society initiative, Red Tomato collaborates with projects throughout the U.S. to create a food system based on ecological, family farm and fair trade practices.
