Driving North on I95 towards Boston, passers by can’t miss a huge sign for Ward’s Berry Farm in Sharon. Farmers Jim and Bob Ward have a reason to get the name out there: their 150 acre property is one of two commercial farms in town. In 1981, their father Bill hatched an unusual retirement scheme: 7,000 blueberry bushes. A few years later, when he passed away, the two brothers took over the farm, despite the fact that neither of them had any farming experience. They learned quickly!

Today, almost anything that can be grown in Massachusetts can be found at Ward’s Berry Farm. Whether it’s pick your own, sold at the farm stand, or in local stores, Ward’s thrills local food enthusiasts with fresh heirloom tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, peas, rhubarb, pumpkins, corn, over 30 varieties of heirloom squash…the list goes on and on! In addition to brothers Bob and Jim, their mother Ann, contributes widely to the business of running the farm—not the least of which means that she makes a variety of baked goods for the farm stand.

Ward’s was one of the first farms to sign on with Red Tomato. Jim Ward is particularly pleased that Red Tomato has found him a market for his real passion – high-flavor heirloom tomatoes. Jim started growing unusual varieties like Black Krim and Green Zebras mostly because his own family loved them, but it turns out they are real crowdpleasers in local stores. “It’s great to finally be able to make some money on them, but it’s also really nice to hear that people appreciate what we do.”

Just a quick glance into the farm stand store and shoppers can see shelf tops lined with trophies for the farm’s prize winning tomatoes. Far be it from the Wards to rest on their laurels. Ever diversifying, the farm has expanded the reach of its produce to include Boston restaurants, Harvard University dining services and even Fenway Park. With so many opportunities to taste what Wards Berry Farm has to offer, don’t miss out!
